From the archive: Kikagaku Moyo — Green Sugar

Tokyo quintet Kikagaku Moyo released Green Sugar as the opening track of their 2016 album House in the Tall Grass on Guruguru Brain. The official video, hosted on the label's YouTube channel, pairs the song's sitar-laced, motorik groove with imagery that mirrors the record's patient, unfolding structure. Five members — Tomo Katsurada, Daoud Popal, Ryu Kurosawa, Kotsu Guy and Go Kurosawa — build the track from a gentle, repetitive pulse into a brighter, guitar-led release, showing the balance of soft and loud that defined the album.
House in the Tall Grass was the group's third full-length and marked a refinement of their songwriting, moving from the free-form jams of earlier work toward more structured, melodic pieces. Green Sugar remains one of the clearest entry points into that sound: a concise, warm psychedelic rock song that carries the band's sitar-and-fuzz signature without overstaying its welcome. The video is a useful document of Kikagaku Moyo at the point where their international audience was growing fastest.
