Jeremy Cunningham releases Passing Fires, a psychedelic-tinged jazz/post-rock meditation on memory

Jeremy Cunningham

Chicago drummer and composer Jeremy Cunningham has released his new album Passing Fires on Northern Spy Records. The follow-up to his acclaimed 2020 debut The Weather Up There expands his collaborative approach with an extraordinary cast including Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven, Josh Johnson, Paul Bryan and Sen Morimoto. Produced by Cunningham alongside Paul Bryan and Josh Johnson, the twelve-track set transforms intimate piano sketches and family-room recordings into what reviewer Ljubinko Zivkovic on Echoes and Dust describes as a varied, engaging suite moving between jazz/post-rock combinations and psychedelic textures. The opener "Beyond the Veil" sets a hypnotic groove while the title track offers a tender ballad with family-room intimacy. Cunningham's compositions blur boundaries between jazz, experimental music and song, with psychedelic textures evident throughout. Passing Fires is available on vinyl, CD and digitally via Bandcamp and Northern Spy Records.
