Bill Baird releases Life Creates Itself, recorded in a day at Sear Sound

Bill Baird has released Life Creates Itself, a new album issued 25 September through Royal Oakie Records. The record was tracked largely in a single session at Sear Sound in New York, a studio day arranged by producer Jasper Leach after years of friendship rooted in Texas psychedelia and a shared love of Captain Beefheart. KRAMER handled mastering.
The ten-song set opens with a cover of Jon Jost's "Fixin' to Die" from the 1977 film Last Chants for a Slow Dance, recorded live on the first take. Pedrum Siadatian of Allah-Las and PAINT contributes lead guitar on "Horse Moon"; Austin Day plays what Baird calls a Japanese autoharp on "If True Love Is Blind". "Where's Your Hair?" draws on Beefheart and Arthur Russell, while the closing "I Can't Run Away from Me" emerged during a songwriting class at Esalen.
Baird describes the album as a songwriter record through and through, and the quick tracking gives it an unrehearsed intimacy. The result sits alongside his earlier work but feels more direct, less layered. Life Creates Itself is available now on Bandcamp and through Royal Oakie Records.
