Early Moods: Zachary Nathanson reviews Ready for the Grave on Echoes and Dust

Los Angeles doom metal quintet Early Moods released their third album Ready for the Grave on 18 September 2026 through RidingEasy Records. The review by Zachary Nathanson on Echoes and Dust describes a record that wastes no time announcing its intentions: loud, heavy, psychedelic, and unapologetically steeped in the metallic gloom that shaped the genre's earliest days.
Produced by Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Tool), the album channels classic foundations from Candlemass, Pentagram, Black Sabbath and Witchfinder General. The opening title track sets the tone with sludgy grooves, Iommi-esque riffing and soaring vocals evoking Messiah Marcolin's Nightfall era. 'Inquisition' follows with a Master of Reality-style stomp, while 'Thy Eternal Grief' shifts from mournful acoustic passages to an '80s-styled gallop. 'The Prowler' channels Peter Hammill and Van der Graaf Generator theatricality. 'When Light Fades' opens with Giallo cinema flourishes before dissolving into Floydian haze. The seven-minute epic 'Ashes of the Damned' closes the album with orchestral, cinematic doom.
The review concludes that Ready for the Grave plays like a horror film unfolding inside your mind — equal parts doom, psychedelia and slasher-era grit — brutal, immersive and proudly noncommercial. The first single and title track 'Ready For The Grave' has an official music video on RidingEasy Records' YouTube channel. Pre-orders are available via RidingEasy Records and Bandcamp.
