Kommissar Hjuler & Mama Baer: 25 years of experimental music and art

Kommissar Hjuler & Mama Baer

It's Psychedelic Baby Magazine has published an extensive interview with Kommissar Hjuler (Detlev Hjuler) and Mama Baer (Andrea Hjuler), the German duo from Flensburg who have been making experimental recordings, handmade records and visual art together since 1999. Conducted by Klemen Breznikar and published 13 October 2026, the conversation spans their early tape experiments, the Brotkatze project, their involvement with NO!art and the Fluxus +/- series on Psych.KG, and Detlev's recent novels.

The duo describe how they started with cassette recorders, voices and household sounds, releasing tiny editions through Der Schöne-Hjuler-Memorial-Fond. Detlev recounts his background as a collector of experimental music — from Talking Heads' Remain in Light through Family Fodder, Medium Medium and Whitehouse — and how meeting Jan Iwers (Tuulen Laulu) led to their first collaborative recordings. Mama Baer reflects on entering music without that collector history, finding freedom in not knowing the canon: "If you know too much industrial music, you run the risk to copy anything you like."

The interview covers their evolution from musicians to visual artists, with handmade covers becoming exhibition pieces in their own right; the Brotkatze project sending dried-bread cat figures to artists worldwide; the 'Antizipation des Generalized Other' recording that drew over a hundred reinterpretations; and collaborations with Deutsch Nepal, Family Fodder and Medium Medium. Detlev on Fluxus: "I am not really sure that we do fluxus." The piece is a rare document of a quarter-century of uncompromising experimental practice at the intersection of sound, visual art and Fluxus-adjacent networks.
